Katherine Escapes Mal’akh in the Darkened Laboratory
The Lost SymbolKatherine Escapes Mal’akh in the Darkened Laboratory is the sequence in which Katherine Solomon turns a trap inside the Smithsonian Museum Support Center into a narrow escape. First warned by Robert Langdon that her brother’s message is false and that the invited guest is dangerous, she discovers that Trish Dunne has disappeared and Mal’akh has entered Pod 5. The pursuit exposes the danger concealed behind the guest’s disguise, and ends with Katherine identifying him as the man who killed her mother and escaping by car.
The Warning and the Discovery
The danger reaches Katherine through a phone call from Langdon. He tells her that Peter Solomon has been taken captive, and that the message apparently sent from Peter’s phone was not written by Peter: someone else has the phone and has used it to draw Langdon to Washington. Katherine initially objects that she has just received a message saying Peter is coming to the lab. When Langdon asks her to read it, its request that Dr. Abaddon be admitted makes clear to him that the invitation is part of the deception. He urges her to leave immediately.
The security guard’s playback supplies the first evidence of what has happened inside the building. At Katherine’s request, he checks the monitors for Trish and sees her leaving the lobby with the guest, entering Wet Pod, and later failing to emerge with him. The guest comes out alone, his jacket sleeves wet to the elbows, and proceeds toward Pod 5 carrying what appears to be Trish’s key card. The guard recognizes that the unexplained absence and the guest’s movement through the facility amount to a serious security breach. For Katherine, the monitor’s recorded images turn Langdon’s alarming warning into an immediate threat.
Trapped in Pod 5
Katherine runs through the dark interior toward the exit while remaining on the phone with the guard. Only when he checks the entry record does she learn that the video is playback, not a live feed: the guest has already used Trish’s card to enter Pod 5. Katherine is still inside. She asks for help and tells the guard to go to Wet Pod for Trish, then closes her phone to extinguish its light and keep her position concealed.
Inside the darkness, she tries to move without revealing where she is. When the approaching Mal’akh catches hold of her lab coat, she slips out of it and gets away. The encounter leaves her disoriented in the unlit space, but she keeps moving. Mal’akh has disabled the outer keypad by forcing a dime into the card slot, preventing another key-card entry until the mechanism is dismantled. He expects the blocked entrance to leave Katherine and him alone together.
A brief glow from Katherine’s phone draws Mal’akh toward her, but she has placed the device on a waist-high metal strut. He runs into the wall while she escapes along it. Feeling the regularly spaced studs with one hand, Katherine follows the pod’s perimeter and discovers a smooth, studless section: the movable specimen bay. The normal door is held shut by a security rod seated in the floor. She pulls the rod free, works the heavy panel open, and squeezes through the gap as Mal’akh reaches her. This improvised exit turns the building’s oversize specimen door, usually intended for moving large objects, into her route out of the sealed pod.
The Pursuit Outside
Katherine reaches the exterior of Pod 5 and runs toward the main entrance, but judges that neither that route nor the distance to her Volvo gives her enough time. Instead of rounding the building’s corner, she cuts across the lawn with her eyes closed. The motion-activated security lights switch on; because her eyes have adjusted to the darkness inside the pod, she avoids looking into the sudden brightness. The lights disrupt Mal’akh’s pursuit long enough for her to reach the car.
Katherine has left her keys in the Volvo’s center console. Once the engine starts and the headlights come on, she sees Mal’akh approaching. He breaks through the side window and grabs her by the neck. In the struggle to get away, Katherine’s attention is caught by the markings on his body, visible where his face makeup has been torn aside. He tells her that he should have killed her ten years earlier, on the night he killed her mother. The statement connects the present attack to a crime Katherine had not recognized him as responsible for, and a memory confirms his identity.
Escape and Revelation
Katherine accelerates in reverse, dragging Mal’akh alongside the car until the vehicle passes through evergreens and leaves him behind. She reaches the upper parking lot, where he gets to his feet and gestures toward her, but she drives away and reaches Silver Hill Road. Her escape is therefore not a decisive defeat of her pursuer: it is a break in his immediate hold over her, achieved by using the specimen bay, the security lights, and the car as successive means of getting clear.
The episode also changes the meaning of the invitation that brought the guest into the facility. The threat was not merely an intruder searching the lab: Mal’akh had gained access through Peter’s stolen phone and a message that enlisted Katherine’s trust in Dr. Abaddon. Within the encounter, Katherine learns that Mal’akh is also the killer of her mother. The sequence shifts her from trying to make sense of Langdon’s warning to recognizing a personal enemy, while leaving Trish’s fate unresolved in the events shown here.
